Playwriting

The SCDA Playwriting Committee runs a variety of competitions which are open to members and non-members alike.
The aim of the Committee is to encourage new writing for community drama groups.
Below are some details about a selection of the competitions, but this is not an exhaustive list.

THE SCOTT SALVER: An annual competition for plays making their debut performance at a District Round of the Scottish One Act Play Festival. Plays are judged by a team of readers. The plays are not judged on performance.

The winning author is presented with the Scott Salver at the Scottish Final of the One Act Play Festival.

THE GEOFFREY WHITWORTH COMPETITION: An annual UK wide competition, open to plays making their debut performance at a District Round of the One Act Play Festival anywhere in the UK. The play must not have been published anywhere prior to its performance. Authors are encouraged to revise their scripts after performance prior to submission. All plays entered for the Geoffrey Whitworth competition are read and marked by a professional judge.

The winner of the Geoffrey Whitworth competition is presented with their prize at the British Final of the One Act Play Festival.

PLAY ON WORDS: This competition is usually held biennially. The play must not have been performed or published prior to being entered in the competition. In the first instance plays are read by a team of readers who then put forward a short list of plays to the professional judge for final adjudication. The winning plays are then performed by SCDA member clubs at a Gala Performance.
