There are many ways in which I, as National Drama Advisor, can provide training and development for SCDA members
Club workshops/Rehearsal visits
These workshops or rehearsal visits are at the request of the Club and usually run either at a local venue or club premises. I will liaise with the club to provide a generic or bespoke workshop that suits the needs of the club members. This may cover skills such as acting or directing both for youth and adults, or may be directly related to a production in which case I need a copy of the script sufficiently in advance to give me time to prepare.
Your SCDA membership covers my time including travel and preparation but a small contribution of £25 is requested towards travel expenses. Where an overnight stay is required this is at the expense of the club but I am more than happy to stay with a club member if that makes the workshop more affordable. If you are unable to meet the cost of £25 please contact me on email@example.com as we may be able to waive this fee in exceptional circumstances, or provide an alternative solution.
These are run at the request of the District or Divisional Committee and will be run in a high quality venue as centrally located as possible within the Division. Content of the workshop will be agreed in advance with the person requesting the workshop
National Training Events:
These are run at the request of General Council in a high quality well equipped venue with a range of respected theatre professionals. The choice of skills on offer is usually based on discussions with Divisional representatives and may link to recurring themes arising within adjudication at Festivals.
Specialist Skills sessions:
I can arrange for a professional tutor to visit your club, District or Division to assist you with a production. This can be tailored to the particular needs of the club and can cover anything from performance skills such as accents or stage combat to Director assistance at a masterclass level. I can also recommend specialists in Technical skills, make-up or costumes.
I have access to networks through which I can source professional tutors, and you can be assured that I will do all I can to match the tutor to your specific needs. Only respected, high quality professionals are used and wherever possible I will suggest people who I have either worked with professionally or who have been recommended to me.
I am aware that the cost of a professional tutor could be a barrier to clubs, however we may be able to suggest funding that you could apply for to subsidise these workshops. Alternatively you could contact a club(s) in your area to see if you can share costs and boost numbers for the workshop.
Online Training Courses:
Attending workshops can be expensive or may not be possible in the timeframes that they are needed so I am constantly on the lookout for online resources that members can access. Links to these courses will be promoted through this website, Scene magazine, e-newsletters and social media.
From time to time SCDA receives information about training courses and residential programmes that may be of interest to our members. As well as passing this information on, I will try to negotiate favourable rates wherever possible.
A workshop may not always be what your club needs. If you just wish to talk through your ideas or issues that come up during planning or rehearsal you can arrange a time for a telephone call or Skype session. As I work part-time and am often out of the office visiting clubs please contact me vial the email link below to arrange a suitable time.
For all questions or queries relating to artistic development please contact me directly as delays may occur if emails are sent via Headquarters.
