Inverness's Eden Court Theatre to Host SCDA Drama Finals

INVERNESS is hosting Scotland's top amateur actors in the country's biggest Drama Festival next month.

The Scottish Finals of the SCDA one-act play festival take place on May 22-24 at 7.00pm at the Eden Court Theatre.

Nine drama clubs the length and breadth of Scotland will stage their plays and compete for the coveted Wheatley Tassie.

The adjudicator with the difficult task of deciding on the winner is Jill Colby from Hertfordshire who has worked in theatre for nearly thirty years as actor and director.

The Festival takes place over three consecutive nights. On Thursday May 22, Crossmichael Drama Club from near Castle Douglas open the festival with "Ritual for Dolls" by George MacEwan Green. They are followed by Wick Players who will stage "The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish” by David Tristram and the evening closes with Tryst Theatre from Falkirk with "Duck Variations" by David Mamet.

On the Friday, McGavin Drama Club from Kilmarnock open with "My California" by Lisa D'Amour, Linlithgow Players are next with ";A Night Under Canvas" by Lisa Hunt and they are followed by Carnoustie Theatre Club with "The Last of the Last of the Mohicans" by Hugh Leonard.

The last night sees Kilmuir Drama Club from Skye with "Close to Croydon" by Gillian Plowman, Stewarton Drama Group from Ayrshire will present "One Good Beating" by Linda McLean and Blairgowrie Players close the Festival with "Effie's Burning" by Valerie Windsor.

Organising Secretary of the Festival is Dingwall's Sandy Glass. He said: "We look forward to welcoming the nine teams to Inverness. During the last three years, Eden Court has undergone a terrific transformation to become the largest arts centre north of the border, so I know they will all enjoy performing in the exciting new venue."

"Our audiences, too, will enjoy the nine intriguing plays which include both excellent comedies and riveting dramas. This is the best amateur theatre in the country, so we are assured of three excellent nights' entertainment next month."

Funded by the Scottish Arts Council, SCDA is a community-based arts organisation which aims to showcase and develop the very best amateur acting talent in the country.

For tickets, visit the Eden Court Box Office or telephone 01463 234 234.

The winner will go on to represent Scotland at the British Finals which are in Swansea on July 4 and 5.
